Dream Again by Fatima Salaam

I tell my clients all the time—Dream BIGG.

I encourage them to fuel their dreams with Belief, Imagination, and Gratitude. Once they identify their dreams, we push them to Go For It!

As adults, it may become more difficult to keep our dreams BIGG and alive because of disappointments, stress, and despair.

I know from my own experience that it is very possible to reignite our dormant dreams.

Here are some tips that will help us Dream BIGG again:

Belief

The first way to reinvigorate our dream space is to take a good look at what we believe and hold to be true. Our beliefs drive our thoughts, emotions, and actions. Whether our beliefs are positive or negative, they set the tone on how we think, feel, and act.

Take a moment to identify a belief. Is it true? Is it positive or negative? Does it serve you? How does your belief take form as an emotion and an action?

Sometimes, we may be surprised at the beliefs that need to be eliminated. This process can lead to fostering a positive belief system. I know I had my aha moment when I discovered that I had stopped believing and trusting in myself. I decided to focus on developing hope, resilience, and joy again.

An easy and impactful way to develop a positive belief system is to read 10 pages of personal development per day. Or you can listen to 20 minutes per day using one of my favorite apps- www.audible.com.

Imagination

The next way to dream again is to take time to imagine. Our imagination can solve problems and fuel our passion and purpose. If our days are filled with things to do, work, commuting, and mindless activity, it can dull our ability to connect with our hearts. I believe our heart is our own GPS system.

When is the last time you heard your heartbeat? Or felt it? Did you know that our hearts can guide us toward what’s good for us or away from what’s bad for us?

One tip to reengage your imagination is to do a ‘heartstorm’. It’s my own term that I use that means really listening to what my heart wants without judgement or censure. Set the intention to listen to your heart. Sit quietly. When ideas or thoughts come,  jot them in a beautiful journal.

Gratitude

Another way to unleash our dreams is to adopt a gratitude attitude. Our attitude impacts how we adapt to the good, bad, and ugly in our lives. For some, our days are centered on what’s in it for me, being popular, and negativity etc, instead of service to others, purpose, and positivity.

When I was going through a very tough time in my life, I started a gratitude countdown. It’s very simple. When I wake up, before getting out of bed, I list all of the people, things, and experiences that I am grateful for until I feel full of grace. Therefore, no matter what I face next, I carry the feeling of what it feels like to be enveloped in grace and mercy.

You can also keep a gratitude journal where you list everything that you are grateful for at the end of the day.

Go For It

The final way to expand our dream space is to get to work. As our dreams grow, our goals should grow, and our work should grow.

In Paulo Coelho’s ‘The Alchemist’, the boy meets a merchant. During their conversations, he learns that there are two types of dreamers. One type of dreamer is the merchant. He dreams of making a holy pilgrimage. But he never saves money or makes any plans to go on the journey. He only uses his dream to get him from day to day.

Another type of dreamer is the boy. He has a dream to go after his treasure in Egypt. Immediately, he makes a plan. He sells his sheep, sacrifices his comfort, and embarks on an arduous journey to fulfill his dream. He relentlessly pursues his dream.

What kind of dreamer are you?

We believe in you!
